Library Read Aloud
For my real life inquiry assignment, I decided to go to a local library and listen to a read aloud for the children. When I first entered the library, excited children were everywhere waiting for the reading to begin. As soon as the lady entered the room all of the children settled down. The reader was very interactive with them and the children were fully enjoying it. The woman reading the short story was sure to point out all of the pictures to the children and paused the story if there were any words that she thought the students would not understand. The woman reading followed all of the guidelines of reading out loud that I have learned in my classes here at the University of Tennessee. The children showed the positive effects that guided reading can bring, and I thought that it was a very good experience for the kids involved. When the story was finished, all of the children booed and whined because they wanted it to continue. The woman reading was sure to suggest similar books that could be checked out and read at home. After all the children were released back to their parents, they ran straight towards the children's book section in the library. It is great for children to experience reading socially before they are even in elementary school. It shows them that it is something that their peers enjoy and it is something that they should enjoy as well. After the reading, all of the students were converting about the book they had just heard and about all of the books that they wanted to read. It was really a great experience to be a part of because I think it is so important for children to view reading as something fun and cool.
